Pocos de Caldas is a region about 100 miles north of Sao Paolo, known for its coffee and mineral spring spas. It is very fertile, and the area's green hills are covered with coffee farms with a predominantly volcanic soil base.
Relatively high altitudes (3300 ft) and cool winter temperatures allow the coffee cherries to grow slowly, concentrating a more complex flavor profile.
Peaberry coffees are rare, occurring in only 5% or fewer crops, and are associated in particular with Tanzania, although, in this case, they can be found in other regions, too. A peaberry-type coffee bean is one where the coffee cherry has a single bean inside rather than the more common two beans. It is more oval or pea-shaped rather than looking like half an oval, as most coffee beans do. It is suggested that peaberry-type beans make for a more complex and acidic coffee with a slightly lighter body.
